Jurade 2023. A celebration of Saint Emilion vineyards

There is no moment in the Bordeaux vineyard calendar that is more steeped in tradition and wine history than the Saint Emilion Jurade induction ceremonies. Nearly always held on a Sunday, this year the induction ceremonies were held on Sunday the 18th of June in the heart of the medieval town of Saint Emilion. Michael Baynes was privileged to have been a guest of a Jurade councilman, Jean-Philippe Saby who as a 9th generation winemaker is a perfect representation of the traditions surrounding the vineyards of Bordeaux.

The Saint-Emilion Jurade holds a rich history that dates back several centuries and is deeply intertwined with the prestigious winemaking tradition of the Saint-Emilion region in Bordeaux, France. The Jurade is an ancient brotherhood (just an expression, there are plenty of sisters in the hood too 😊) established to safeguard and promote the wines of Saint-Emilion, while also preserving the cultural heritage of the area.

The origins of the Jurade can be traced back to the 12th century when the town of Saint-Emilion began to flourish as a renowned wine-producing region. In 1199, the Jurade was officially founded by King John Lackland of England, who was also the Duke of Aquitaine at the time. The establishment of the Jurade marked the recognition of the wines of Saint-Emilion as exceptional and of great importance.

The Jurade played a vital role in safeguarding the quality and reputation of Saint-Emilion wines throughout the centuries. Its members, known as “Jurats,” were appointed to oversee the winemaking practices, ensure the adherence to strict quality standards, and protect the interests of the wine producers and merchants. The Jurats were highly respected individuals within the Bordeaux vineyard community, chosen for their expertise and dedication to the winemaking craft.

The induction ceremony held by the Jurade is a grand and ceremonial event that takes place every year more or less on the last day of spring – this year, June 18th. This date holds special significance as it marks the anniversary of the founding of the Jurade. The ceremony is a celebration of Saint-Emilion’s winemaking heritage and serves to honor and welcome new members into the brotherhood.

The induction ceremony begins with a procession led by the Jurats, dressed in their traditional red robes and hats.

The Jurats march through the historic streets of Saint-Emilion, accompanied by music and the cheering of the onlookers – this year it was especially lively with a jazz quartet leading us through the streets.

The procession culminates at the Church, where a service is held to bless the new Jurats and the wines of the region. The new Jurats (who may be from anywhere in the world) then become ambassadors of Saint Emilion wines.

After the ceremony, the new Jurats are formally inducted into the brotherhood during a solemn oath-taking ceremony. They pledge their commitment to upholding the values of the Jurade, promoting the wines of Saint-Emilion, and preserving the cultural heritage of the region. The induction ceremony is followed by a festive banquet, where the Jurats and invited guests gather to enjoy a lavish meal paired with exquisite wines from the Saint-Emilion appellation.
